What is Karate?

Karate may be defined as a weaponless (unarmed) means of self-defence. It consists of dynamic offensive and defensive techniques using all parts of the body to their maximum advantage.

It is a refined Japanese martial art that follows a scientifically studied and perfected technical system of training and enhancement of a human being's mental and physical capabilities.

Karate means “Empty Hand”

In Japanese, Kara means “empty” and Te means “hand”. Karate therefore represents the discipline of fighting without weapons.

Karate as Self Defence

Karate as self defence is one of the most dynamic aspects of martial arts. The trained karateka is able to coordinate the mind and body perfectly, thereby allowing him to unleash tremendous physical power when required.

It is not simply the possession of great physical strength that makes a strong karateka, but the ability to coordinate both mind and body.

What is Shotokan Karate?

Shotokan Karate is one of the oldest and most refined styles of Karate, developed by Grand Master Gichin Funakoshi, the father of modern Karate-do, in Okinawa, Japan.

Shotokan Karate is known for its simplicity and effectiveness. Its techniques are based upon the correct application of body dynamics.

Students learn patience, discipline, coordination and balance together with the delivery of Shotokan techniques. Shotokan Karate emphasizes harmonious use of mind and body.

At the heart of traditional Shotokan Karate training is the development of one's character as well as the conditioning of one's body. We train the mind and body to function as a team.

Character

The disciplines of respect for others, calmness and perfection of character are just as important as the physical skills. Even though Shotokan's powerful techniques can bring very effective results, Shotokan Karate is much more than a form of fighting.

It is a discipline. For some, it is a catalyst that impacts, sharpens and improves all aspects of their life.
